Glutathione functions in redox balance, detoxification, and sulfur amino acid storage. It participates in reactions that help maintain ascorbate and protein thiol status. The molecule serves as a cofactor for several enzymes, including glutathione peroxidases and glutathione S-transferases. These enzymes reduce peroxides and conjugate electrophiles, respectively. Glutathione also contributes to the metabolism of xenobiotics and to the transport of cysteine between tissues. How interorgan transport and tissue-specific regulation shape whole-body pools remains an active area of study.
Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. Its cysteine residue carries a thiol group, which allows the molecule to participate in reduction and oxidation reactions. The compound exists in most living cells, where the reduced form, often abbreviated GSH, is usually more abundant than the oxidized disulfide form, GSSG. Intracellular concentrations are commonly in the millimolar range, while extracellular concentrations are much lower. This uneven distribution supports its role as a major cellular redox buffer.
Cells synthesize glutathione through two ATP-dependent enzymatic steps. The first step combines glutamate and cysteine to form gamma-glutamylcysteine, catalyzed by glutamate-cysteine ligase. The second step adds glycine, producing the complete tripeptide, catalyzed by glutathione synthetase. Glutathione itself can inhibit the first enzyme, providing negative feedback when levels are high. Because cysteine is often limiting, its availability influences how quickly the pathway proceeds. These reactions occur in the cytosol, and the resulting glutathione can be distributed to other compartments.
Glutathione is synthesized in two ATP-dependent steps. First, gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase links glutamate and cysteine; second, glutathione synthetase adds glycine to form the complete tripeptide. The pathway is feedback-inhibited by GSH itself, which helps maintain steady intracellular levels. Tissues vary widely in glutathione content, with the liver typically containing the highest concentrations, followed by the kidneys, lungs, and erythrocytes. Because cysteine is often limiting, its availability influences synthesis rates, and regulation of this pathway varies by cell type.
Glutathione serves as a cofactor for several enzymes, including glutathione peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase. These enzymes help reduce hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxides, and they conjugate reactive electrophiles for excretion. The molecule also acts as a reservoir for cysteine, an amino acid that is prone to oxidation. In addition, glutathione participates in the metabolism of nitric oxide, leukotrienes, and prostaglandins. Its roles extend to cell signaling, apoptosis, and the regulation of protein function through S-glutathionylation.

Because GSH is central to redox balance, its status is studied in aging, liver disease, neurodegenerative conditions, and metabolic disorders. Observational studies often report lower GSH or higher GSSG in affected tissues, but such associations do not establish that raising glutathione changes disease outcomes. Oral glutathione is digested into amino acids, and whether intact absorption occurs remains debated; precursors such as N-acetylcysteine and cysteine donors are also investigated. Regulatory agencies generally treat glutathione as a dietary supplement, not an approved drug, and clinical claims require evidence from controlled trials.
Glutathione is a small tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine, with the unusual gamma-glutamyl linkage between glutamate and cysteine. Its cysteine thiol group makes it a major non-enzymatic antioxidant in cells. The reduced form, GSH, predominates in most intracellular compartments, while the oxidized disulfide form, GSSG, is produced when GSH reduces reactive oxygen species. Intracellular concentrations often reach millimolar levels, whereas plasma concentrations are much lower, typically in the low micromolar range. This gradient reflects active synthesis, transport, and consumption rather than passive distribution.
Stability depends on pH, temperature, oxygen exposure, and trace metals. Aqueous solutions of reduced glutathione are susceptible to oxidation, especially when neutral or alkaline and exposed to air. Transition metal ions can catalyze thiol oxidation, so chelators and inert atmospheres are sometimes used in research settings. Standards are typically stored cold and desiccated, with limited freeze-thaw cycles. Questions remain about how closely in vitro stability data reflect the behavior of glutathione within intact cells and tissues.
Measuring glutathione requires attention to oxidation during sample handling, because GSH in biological samples can convert to GSSG or form mixed disulfides with proteins after collection. Acidic extraction, rapid cooling, and chelating agents are commonly used to limit such changes. Analytical methods usually distinguish free reduced glutathione, total glutathione, and protein-bound forms. Because these forms have different stability and reactivity, reported values depend heavily on the preparation protocol. No single preparation is universally suitable for every biological matrix or analytical goal.
== Carryover effect in clinical laboratory == Carryover experiments are widely used for clinical chemistry and immunochemistry analyzers to evaluate and validate carryover effects. The pipetting and washing systems in an automated analyzer are designed to continuously cycle between the aspiration of patient specimens and cleaning. An obvious concern is a potential for carryover of analyte from one patient specimen into one or more following patient specimens, which can falsely increase or decrease the measured analyte concentration. Specimen carryover is typically addressed by judicious choice of probe material, probe design, and an efficient probe washing system to flush the probe of residual patient specimens or reagents retained in their bores or clinging to the probe exterior surface before they are introduced into the next patient sample, reagent container, or cuvette/reaction vessel.
Ethyl cyanohydroxyiminoacetate (oxyma) is the oxime of ethyl cyanoacetate and finds use as an additive for carbodiimides, such as dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) in peptide synthesis. It acts as a neutralizing reagent for the basicity or nucleophilicity of the DCC due to its pronounced acidity (pKa 4.60) and suppresses base catalyzed side reactions, in particular racemization.
In addition to their actions as reuptake inhibitors of serotonin, some SSRIs are also, coincidentally, ligands of the sigma receptors. Fluvoxamine is an agonist of the σ1 receptor, while sertraline is an antagonist of the σ1 receptor, and paroxetine does not significantly interact with the σ1 receptor. None of the SSRIs have significant affinity for the σ2 receptor. Fluvoxamine has by far the strongest activity of the SSRIs at the σ1 receptor. High occupancy of the σ1 receptor by clinical dosages of fluvoxamine has been observed in the human brain in positron emission tomography (PET) research. Agonism of the σ1 receptor by fluvoxamine may have beneficial effects on cognition. In contrast to fluvoxamine, the relevance of the σ1 receptor in the actions of the other SSRIs is uncertain and questionable due to their low affinity for the receptor relative to the SERT.
Despite criticism and international opposition to his controversial anti-narcotics drive, Duterte's domestic approval rating remained relatively high throughout his presidency. Duterte began his presidency with a high trust rating of 79% and 91% (the highest of any Philippine official since 1999), from pollsters Social Weather Stations (SWS) and Pulse Asia, respectively. His net satisfaction rating reached its lowest at 45% in July 2018, attributed to inflation during the period as well as Duterte calling God "stupid" for the concept of original sin in the Bible; eventually, his satisfaction rating rose to 60% by the end of the year. Halfway through his term, Duterte's approval rating reached 79%, the highest among his predecessors at this stage in their presidencies. It rose to 87% by the end of 2019 due to the successful hosting of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games as well as the administration's poverty reduction programs. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Pulse Asia reported in September 2020 that 84% of Filipinos approved of the administration's efforts to contain the virus and provide assistance to those who lost their jobs; 92% of the poll respondents also agreed Duterte had "done well" in preventing the contagion in the country. Duterte ended 2021 with an approval rating of 60%, wherein higher net satisfaction was observed among those who have been or are willing to get vaccinated. Duterte maintained his high approval and trust ratings as he approached the end of his term.

Within the mesh scaffolding of bat wing skin, collagen fibers cross bones perpendicular to the long axes of the bones, therefore mechanical properties of bat wing skin oriented perpendicular to the long axes of the bones exhibit a lower stiffness than the skin that is oriented parallel to the long axes of the bodies. Stiffer skin is necessary for bat wing skin oriented in the direction parallel to the long axes of the bones to prevent too much deformation of bat wing skin during flight (with respect to the bone), resulting in the shearing of the bat wing skin off of the bone. Flexible skin is necessary for the direction perpendicular to the long axes of the bones for facilitating the shape changes needed for movement and control during flight. This anisotropy of bat wing skin is also useful as method of storing and releasing elastic energy, particularly during the downstroke. During the downstroke, the bat extends its wing and the wing skin experiences an aerodynamic force. The wing skin expands and counteracts the aerodynamic force. After the wing is fully extended, the orientation of the wing is nearly vertical and the aerodynamic forces on the wing are reduced. As the aerodynamic force is reduced, the wing recoils, drawing the digits of the wings together in preparation for the upstroke.
== Signs and symptoms == Often, food illnesses are not attributed to A. parasiticus because it is mistaken for A. flavus. Serious symptoms of aflatoxin exposure by either ingestion or inhalation of spores, or through direct skin contact, can occur amongst humans and animals. Signs and symptoms of exposure in humans may include delayed development and stunted growth among children, while adults may experience teratogenic effects, lung damage, ulcers, skin irritation, fever, and acute liver disease, which can later lead to liver carcinoma and death.
Instead strands 3 and 4 will form a hairpin loop further downstream of the ribosome. The hairpin loop formed by strands 3 and 4 is a terminating loop, when the ribosome comes into contact with the loop, it will be “knocked off” the transcript. When the ribosome is removed the His genes will not be translated and histidine will not be produced by the cell.
=== Engineering strain === Engineering strain, also known as Cauchy strain, is expressed as the ratio of total deformation to the initial dimension of the material body on which forces are applied. In the case of a material line element or fiber axially loaded, its elongation gives rise to an engineering normal strain or engineering extensional strain e, which equals the relative elongation or the change in length ΔL per unit of the original length L of the line element or fibers (in meters per meter). The normal strain is positive if the material fibers are stretched and negative if they are compressed. Thus, we have
The clown loach (Chromobotia macracanthus), or tiger botia, is a tropical freshwater fish belonging to the botiid loach family. It is the sole member of the genus Chromobotia. It originates in inland waters in Indonesia on the islands of Sumatra and Borneo. The fish is called ulanguli by the locals in Sentarum, West Borneo. It is a popular fish in the freshwater aquarium trade and is sold worldwide.

=== Story === The game features three different playable characters, each with their own story arcs that intersect throughout the game: Arthur's Story: Arthur Hastings (Alex Wyndham) works as a censor approving or redacting old news articles from Wellington Wells' Department of Archives, Printing, and Recycling. While working, he comes across a news clipping of him and his older brother Percy (Bradley Henderson) after World War II. At this point, Arthur can either take his Joy (which ends the game) or refuse it, wanting to remember Percy. If the latter choice is taken, Arthur attends an office party with his boss, Victoria Byng (Katherine Kingsley), and watches in horror as Victoria and his co-workers consume a rat that they hallucinate to be a candy-filled piñata. He is then called out as a Downer and chased by two police constables, ending up in the Garden District, now populated by Wastrels. Arthur resolves to escape Wellington Wells and find Percy. With the assistance of various characters, Arthur works his way through the districts uncovering certain truths along the way. It is eventually revealed that the "Very Bad Thing" was when the population of Wellington Wells turned over all children under the age of 13 years to the Germans in exchange for their freedom. Arthur discovers that the German tanks used to threaten the town into compliance were actually dummy tanks made of papier-mâché, and that while the populace could have resisted, they did not out of fear.
==== Gang crackdown ==== From 25 to 27 March 2022, gangs in El Salvador committed 87 homicides; 62 were committed on 26 March alone, the deadliest day in Salvadoran history since the end of the Salvadoran Civil War (1979–1992). Florida International University research director José Miguel Cruz attributed the killings to a breakdown in a secret truce between the government and the gangs, a truce that Bukele has denied. Cruz believed that the killings were a message from the gangs to the government for more concessions as a part of the secret truce.
As an expansion pack for Half-Life, Opposing Force is a first-person shooter. The overall gameplay of Opposing Force does not significantly differ from that of Half-Life. Players navigate through levels, fight hostile non-player characters and solve a variety of puzzles to advance. The game continues Half-Life's methods of an unbroken narrative. The player sees everything through the first person perspective of the protagonist and remains in control of the player character for almost all of the game. Story events are conveyed through the use of scripted sequences rather than cut scenes. Progress through the world is continuous; although the game is divided up into chapters, the only significant pauses are when the game needs to load the next part of an environment. Opposing Force also features an extended multiplayer, incorporating the various new environments and weapons into the original deathmatch mode used in Half-Life. After release, a new capture the flag mode with additional levels, items and powerups, was created by Gearbox. For the most part the player battles through the single-player game alone, but is occasionally assisted by friendly non-player characters. Security guards and scientists will occasionally help the player in reaching new areas and convey relevant plot information. However, Opposing Force also features fellow U.S. Marines who will assist the player in combat to a far greater degree than security guards.
=== Effect of Stimuli on the Release of TSH === Multiple neurogenic stimuli are known to affect the release of TSH from thyrotropes. Exposure to cold temperatures increases the secretion of TSH. This increased secretion results from the increased secretion of TRH, as the hypothalamus is excited by the change in body temperature. Furthermore, emotions that activate the sympathetic nervous system—such as excitement and anxiety—decrease the secretion of TSH. The decrease in secretion is also connected to the change in body temperature. Activation of the sympathetic nervous system increases the body temperature, which then causes a decrease in TRH secretion and the subsequent decrease in TSH secretion. Thyroid hormones can have a direct inhibitory effect on thyrotropic cells, though the exact mechanism is unknown. At elevated levels of thyroxine, the rate of secretion of TSH decreases to near zero, as the body tries to maintain a relatively constant level of thyroid hormone in circulation. However, the inhibitory effect of thyroid hormones may decrease in thyrotropic tumor cells. The receptor affinity for T3 significantly decreases for thyrotropic tumor cells in culture when compared to healthy thyrotropes, which reduces the regulatory effect. In addition, during pregnancy, the size of the pituitary gland increases, and consequently, the expression of TSH also increases. This increase in secretion of TSH likely results from the additional metabolic load that pregnant mothers experience in combination with the secretion of placental hormones.

Glutathione is built from three amino acids: glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. The linkage involves the gamma-carboxyl group of glutamate rather than the alpha-carboxyl group, which is unusual for peptides. This structure protects the bond from some common peptidases.
It is present in nearly all cells, with notable amounts in the liver, kidneys, and red blood cells. The highest intracellular concentrations are usually in the millimolar range. Levels differ by tissue, age, and physiological state.
It is not classified as an essential nutrient because cells can synthesize it from amino acids. Dietary sources exist, but their contribution to tissue pools is not fully established. The body's production depends on enzyme activity and precursor availability.
Glutathione is a tripeptide of three amino acids: glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. The cysteine residue provides the sulfhydryl group that gives the molecule its reducing properties.
