Samples for glutathione analysis require careful handling because the compound oxidizes readily and can be consumed by enzymes after collection. Blood is often treated with acid or thiol-blocking agents soon after draw, and plasma should be separated quickly from red blood cells. Tissues are usually snap-frozen or extracted immediately. Aqueous solutions of glutathione are less stable than dry powder and degrade faster at neutral or alkaline pH, in light, or with dissolved oxygen. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles also reduce reliability.
Quality control for glutathione materials checks identity, assay, purity, water content, and disulfide content. Commercial products vary from research-grade powder to dietary supplements, and labels may not distinguish reduced from oxidized forms. In the United States, oral glutathione is commonly sold as a dietary supplement rather than an approved drug, while injectable forms fall under different rules and may require a prescription. Regulatory status differs by country. Analytical certificates, when available, help verify what a material contains, but independent testing remains important for interpretation.
Laboratory measurement of glutathione typically starts with rapid acid extraction to prevent oxidation and enzymatic degradation. Common methods include enzymatic recycling assays, high-performance liquid chromatography, and liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. The recycling assay uses glutathione reductase and a thiol-reactive colorimetric or fluorescent reagent, measuring total glutathione after converting disulfide forms. Chromatographic methods can separate reduced and oxidized forms, which helps when the redox ratio is the target. Choice of method affects sensitivity, specificity, and the amount of sample needed.
Stability depends on pH, temperature, oxygen exposure, and trace metals. Aqueous solutions of reduced glutathione are susceptible to oxidation, especially when neutral or alkaline and exposed to air. Transition metal ions can catalyze thiol oxidation, so chelators and inert atmospheres are sometimes used in research settings. Standards are typically stored cold and desiccated, with limited freeze-thaw cycles. Questions remain about how closely in vitro stability data reflect the behavior of glutathione within intact cells and tissues.
Measuring glutathione requires attention to oxidation during sample handling, because GSH in biological samples can convert to GSSG or form mixed disulfides with proteins after collection. Acidic extraction, rapid cooling, and chelating agents are commonly used to limit such changes. Analytical methods usually distinguish free reduced glutathione, total glutathione, and protein-bound forms. Because these forms have different stability and reactivity, reported values depend heavily on the preparation protocol. No single preparation is universally suitable for every biological matrix or analytical goal.

Tolkien never expected his stories to become popular, but by sheer accident a book called The Hobbit, which he had written some years before for his own children, came in 1936 to the attention of Susan Dagnall, an employee of the London publishing firm George Allen & Unwin, who persuaded Tolkien to submit it for publication. When it was published a year later, the book attracted adult readers as well as children, and it became popular enough for the publishers to ask Tolkien to produce a sequel.
In Canada, education is a constitutional responsibility of the individual provinces. Provincial governments established the University of Toronto on the Oxbridge model and the University of Alberta and University of Manitoba in the pattern of American state universities. Many older universities in Canada were privately endowed such as McGill University or founded by church denominations, such as Mount Allison University (United Church), Université Laval (Catholic), St Mary's University (Catholic), Queen's University at Kingston (Presbyterian), Dalhousie University (Nonsectarian), St. Francis Xavier University (Catholic), McMaster University (Baptist), and the University of Ottawa (Catholic); these became publicly funded and secular in the 20th century. All major Canadian universities are now publicly funded but maintain institutional autonomy, with the ability to decide admission, tuition, and governance.
The first organic cofactor to be discovered was NAD+, which was identified by Arthur Harden and William Young 1906. They noticed that adding boiled and filtered yeast extract greatly accelerated alcoholic fermentation in unboiled yeast extracts. They called the unidentified factor responsible for this effect a coferment. Through a long and difficult purification from yeast extracts, this heat-stable factor was identified as a nucleotide sugar phosphate by Hans von Euler-Chelpin. Other cofactors were identified throughout the early 20th century, with ATP being isolated in 1929 by Karl Lohmann, and coenzyme A being discovered in 1945 by Fritz Albert Lipmann. The functions of these molecules were at first mysterious, but, in 1936, Otto Heinrich Warburg identified the function of NAD+ in hydride transfer. This discovery was followed in the early 1940s by the work of Herman Kalckar, who established the link between the oxidation of sugars and the generation of ATP. This confirmed the central role of ATP in energy transfer that had been proposed by Fritz Albert Lipmann in 1941. Later, in 1949, Morris Friedkin and Albert L. Lehninger proved that NAD+ linked metabolic pathways such as the citric acid cycle and the synthesis of ATP.

=== United Kingdom === A Chick-fil-A operated in Edinburgh during the Spring of 2018. On October 10, 2019, Chick-fil-A returned to Europe, with the opening of a store at The Oracle shopping centre in Reading, UK. The store closed in March 2020 after The Oracle opted not to continue the lease of the location beyond the six-month pilot period in the face of continued protests over the chain's anti-LGBTQ stance. In February 2019, Chick-fil-A opened a store on a 12-month pilot scheme in Aviemore, Scotland. The store was closed in January 2020 amidst protests and controversy from locals and customers regarding the chain's former donations to charities supporting anti-LGBT rights causes. Chick-fil-A said that they had always planned a short-term stay at the location. Later, the company changed some policies, appointing its first head of diversity in 2020, and focused its charitable activities on education and hunger alleviation rather than opponents of same-sex marriage. In September 2023, the company planned to open five restaurants in the UK from early 2025, investing over $100M over the following ten years in the UK. The chain said that it would apply its charitable policies, including a $25,000 donation to a local organization on opening a Chick-fil-A restaurant and donation of surplus food to local charitable causes, to its UK branches too.

Bread is a significant part of German cuisine, with German bakeries producing about 600 main types of bread and 1,200 types of pastries and rolls (Brötchen). German cheeses account for about 22% of all cheese produced in Europe. Germans produce their ubiquitous sausages in almost 1,500 varieties, including Bratwurst and Weißwurst. The national alcoholic drink is beer. Germany's beer consumption per capita stood at 110 litres (24 imp gal; 29 US gal) in 2013 and remains among the highest in the world. German beer purity regulations date back to the 16th century. Wine has become popular in many parts of the country, especially near the German wine regions. In 2019, Germany was the ninth-largest wine producer in the world. The 2018 Michelin Guide awarded eleven restaurants in Germany three stars, giving the country a cumulative total of 300 stars.
=== Communication === Communication is a vital part of the diagnostic process. The Internist uses both synchronous and asynchronous communication with other members of the medical care team, including other internists, radiologists, specialists, and laboratory technicians. Tools to evaluate teamwork exist and have been employed in multiple settings. Communication to the patient is also important to ensure there is informed consent and shared decision-making throughout the diagnostic process.
=== Thermogravimetric analysis === Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) is one of the most common techniques to investigate pyrolysis with no limitations of heat and mass transfer. The results can be used to determine mass loss kinetics. Activation energies can be calculated using the Kissinger method or peak analysis-least square method (PA-LSM). TGA can couple with Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and mass spectrometry. As the temperature increases, the volatiles generated from pyrolysis can be measured.
== Awards == In 2017, ColdHubs was shortlisted for the UK Royal Academy of Engineering's Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation. It won the 2020 Waislitz Global Citizen Disruptor Award and was the inaugural AYuTe Africa Challenge winner in 2021.
== Background == Opioids are a diverse class of strong, addictive, and inexpensive drugs, which include opiates (i.e., morphine and codeine), oxycodone (OxyContin, Percocet), hydrocodone (Vicodin, Norco), and fentanyl. Traditionally, opioids have been prescribed for short-term pain management, as short-term use is supported by a body of evidence. The usefulness of opioids in chronic pain is dependent on the kind of pain being treated (e.g., visceral and central pain may be "especially unresponsive to long-term opioid therapy") and the patient. Clinical guidelines advise that opioids should only be used for chronic pain if safer alternatives are not feasible, as their risks often outweigh their benefits. The potency and availability of opioids have made them popular as both medical treatments and recreational drugs. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) estimated that over 10 million Americans abused prescription opioids in 2018; 47,600 Americans died from opioid overdoses in 2018. These substances have high risks of addiction and overdose, and long-term use can cause tolerance and physical dependence. SAMHSA allocated $7.5 billion between January 2016 and June 2020, as response to this opioid crisis. These resources aim to increase access to medications for treatment, reduce overdose deaths, and sustain prevention and recovery. When people continue to use opioid medications beyond what a doctor prescribes, whether to minimize pain or induce euphoric feelings, it can mark the beginning stages of an opioid addiction.

Common approaches include enzymatic recycling assays, HPLC, and LC-MS/MS. Acid extraction and rapid processing limit oxidation before analysis.
Reduced glutathione oxidizes easily and can change after collection. Delays, warmth, light, and repeated freezing can alter measured values.
Labels may state total glutathione without specifying reduced and oxidized content. Purity, counterions, and actual assay can vary between products.
Common methods include enzymatic recycling assays, liquid chromatography, and mass spectrometry. Many protocols separate reduced glutathione from its oxidized disulfide form before detection.
